The Uttarakhand government has intensified its crackdown on illegal madrasas operating in the state. Over the past one to one and a half months, the police and administration have sealed more than 110 unauthorized madrasas across different districts.
Statewide Action Against Illegal Madrasas
Following the directives of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, authorities have been identifying and shutting down illegal madrasas in various regions. Recently, four madrasas in Rudrapur, eight in Kichha, three in Bajpur, one in Jaspur, and two in Haridwar were sealed. Prior to this, 92 madrasas in Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal districts were also shut down as part of the ongoing operation.
Who is Behind These Illegal Madrasas?
Chief Minister Dhami has made it clear that any attempts to alter the state’s cultural identity or engage in unauthorized religious activities will be dealt with strictly. The government had previously warned illegal madrasas to comply with regulations, but now, full freedom has been given to law enforcement agencies to take necessary actions. Investigations are also underway to determine who was backing these illegal institutions and what kind of education was being imparted within them.
Students Shifted to Government Schools
To safeguard the future of students affected by the closure of these madrasas, the government is facilitating their admission into government schools. Many of these institutions lacked proper documentation, leading to their closure. In Haridwar’s Bhagwanpur and Mangalore areas, over 10 illegal madrasas were shut down. To maintain peace and order during the crackdown, a large number of PAC (Provincial Armed Constabulary) personnel were deployed in affected areas.
This large-scale operation against illegal madrasas marks a significant step in Uttarakhand’s efforts to regulate religious institutions and ensure that all educational establishments comply with legal norms. Authorities continue to investigate the matter, with more actions likely in the coming days.
