The Rashtrapati Bhavan announced on Monday that the late Karpoori Thakur, a prominent socialist leader and former Chief Minister of Bihar, will be posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. Thakur, widely revered as ‘Jannayak,’ is remembered for his dedicated efforts to uplift backward castes and champion social justice.
Born on January 24, 1924, Thakur played a significant role in India’s freedom struggle, participating in the Quit India Movement against British rule. His political journey began with a victory in the 1952 elections, and he continued to secure success in subsequent polls, never losing a single election in his career.
Thakur served as the Chief Minister of Bihar twice, first from December 1970 to June 1971 and later from December 1977 to April 1979. He was associated with the Praja Socialist Party initially and later aligned with the Janata Party during his tenure as Chief Minister.

One of his landmark contributions was the initiation of reservations for backward castes in government services in Bihar in 1978. This move set the stage for the implementation of the Mandal Commission report in 1990, furthering the cause of social justice.
Karpoori Thakur, known as a “jannayak” or people’s hero, passed away on February 17, 1988, leaving behind a legacy of advocating for the marginalized and working towards equality and empowerment.
In response to the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed delight, highlighting Thakur’s enduring efforts as a champion for social justice. The decision to confer the Bharat Ratna on Thakur coincides with the celebration of his birth centenary, adding to the significance of this prestigious recognition.
