Renowned sculptor Arun Yogiraj, belonging to a lineage of five generations of distinguished sculptors in Mysuru, played a pivotal role in crafting the idol of Ram Lalla for the newly constructed Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Arun Yogiraj, who arrived in Ayodhya for the consecration ceremony (pran pratishtha), expressed his profound gratitude and considered himself the “luckiest person on the earth now.” The idol of Ram Lalla, portraying Lord Ram as a five-year-old child standing on a lotus, was placed inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple last week.
Speaking about his journey into sculpting, Arun Yogiraj highlighted the influence of his father, Yogiraj, and grandfather, Basavanna Shilpi, who received patronage from the King of Mysore. Despite briefly pursuing an MBA and working in the corporate sector, Yogiraj’s passion for sculpting drew him back into the art form in 2008. Since then, his artistry has flourished, leading him to create iconic sculptures that have gained nationwide recognition.
One of Yogiraj’s notable creations is a 30-foot statue of Subhash Chandra Bose, prominently displayed behind the Amar Jawan Jyoti near India Gate in New Delhi. His craftsmanship and dedication to the art of sculpting have made him a respected figure in the field.
The consecration ceremony of the Ram Mandir, attended by people from various walks of life and presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marks a historic and significant moment for devotees and the nation. The idol of Ram Lalla, meticulously sculpted by Arun Yogiraj, is a symbol of reverence and devotion for millions of believers.
