Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal finds himself in legal turmoil as the Delhi Rouse Avenue Court has summoned him on February 17 in response to a complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED has accused Kejriwal of repeatedly failing to comply with their summons in connection with the ongoing probe into the Delhi Liquor Excise policy 2021-22. Despite being summoned five times by the ED—on November 2, December 22, 2023, January 3, 2024, January 18, and February 2—Kejriwal has chosen not to appear, citing the summons as illegal and politically motivated.
The court, taking cognizance of the ED’s complaint, has issued fresh summons to Kejriwal, indicating a decisive turn in the legal proceedings. This development underscores the seriousness of the allegations against Kejriwal and the necessity for his cooperation with the investigative authorities.
Reacting to the court’s order, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala criticized Kejriwal, branding him as “bhagoda no. 1” (runaway no. 1). Poonawala emphasized that Kejriwal’s claims of the summons being illegal have been debunked by the court’s decision to summon him.
Kejriwal now faces the option to challenge the court order or seek relief from personal appearance, potentially appearing through legal representation. However, his legal challenges come amidst mounting pressure from the Delhi crime branch, which has demanded evidence supporting his allegations against the BJP regarding attempts to buy AAP MLAs.
In addition to the alleged liquor scam, the ED is also investigating a case related to the Delhi Jal Board. Recent raids conducted by the ED at 12 locations, including those linked to Kejriwal’s personal secretary Bibhav Kumar and AAP’s Rajya Sabha member ND Gupta, further escalate the legal entanglement surrounding Kejriwal.
Delhi Minister Atishi has criticized the ED’s actions, highlighting the lack of clarity regarding the basis for the raids and suggesting political motives behind the crackdown. The prolonged raid, lasting 16 hours, failed to yield any significant findings, raising questions about the legitimacy of the investigative process.
As the legal battle intensifies, Kejriwal’s political future hangs in the balance, with the outcome of the court proceedings likely to have far-reaching implications for his leadership and the AAP’s political trajectory in Delhi.
