The chilling incident in Assam’s Hailakandi district unfolded as a 40-year-old man named Falaluddin Ansari fell victim to a mob frenzy, accused of goat theft. On the fateful Wednesday night at the Manipur tea estate in the Katlicherra area, approximately 200 locals participated in the heinous act of lynching Ansari. The brutality reached its peak, and Ansari, battered and bruised, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning.
Upon learning of the ghastly incident, the police swiftly intervened. Ansari was rushed to Kathlichera Public Health Centre and subsequently transferred to Hailakandi Civil Hospital. Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, he could not be saved, marking a tragic end to his life.
The police, in response to the incident, identified and apprehended three key accused: Motilal Ghatoar (36), Babulal Manjhi (32), and Murli Gour (35). These individuals now face charges related to the murder of Ansari, who had also been accused of goat theft. Two complaints were filed – one by Ansari’s grieving family for his murder and another against the deceased victim for alleged goat theft.
The Kathlichera police station initiated legal proceedings based on the family’s complaint, registering a case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and additional charges. The accused were promptly presented before the court, with the police seeking remand for further investigation.
Outraged by the gruesome incident, a group of people staged a protest in front of the Kathlichera police station, demanding justice for Ansari and stringent punishment for the perpetrators. Ansari’s family contested the narrative put forth by authorities, asserting that his death was a premeditated murder, refuting claims of theft.
Assurances from the police of an impartial investigation and swift action against the remaining perpetrators have been provided. The horrifying episode not only underscores the urgency of addressing mob violence but also highlights the need for communities and law enforcement to work collaboratively to prevent such tragic incidents in the future. As the year comes to a close, this disturbing incident serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges that persist and the collective responsibility required to build a safer and more just society in the upcoming year and beyond.
