The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), operating under the Ayush Ministry, has joined forces with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to launch a significant clinical trial aimed at studying the efficacy and safety of traditional Ayurvedic formulations in treating anemia among non-pregnant women of reproductive age. The trial will compare the effectiveness of Punarnavadi Mandura, both alone and in combination with Drakshavaleha, to conventional iron folic acid treatment.

Titled “Efficacy and safety of Punarnavadi Mandura alone and in combination with Drakshavaleha compared to iron folic acid in the treatment of moderate iron deficiency anemia among non-pregnant women of reproductive age group: a community-based three-arm multi-centre randomised controlled trial”, this research endeavor is poised to make significant strides in addressing anemia, a prevalent health issue among women in India.

The trial will be conducted across eight different sites, including prominent medical institutions such as MGIMS-Wardha, AIIMS-Jodhpur, and AIIMS-New Delhi, among others. Punarnavadi Mandura, known for its iron-rich composition, will be at the forefront of this investigation, shedding light on the potential of Ayurvedic formulations in combating anemia.

In addition to this groundbreaking clinical trial, the Union Minister of Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal, and the Union Health Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, are set to launch the Ayush-ICMR Advanced Centre for Five Integrative Health Research (AI-ACIHR) at four select AIIMS institutions. These advanced centers will focus on integrative health research in various domains, including gastrointestinal disorders, women and child health, geriatric health, and cancer care, signaling a holistic approach to healthcare.

Furthermore, the ministers will introduce the Indian public health standards for Ayush healthcare facilities, aimed at ensuring uniform quality standards in infrastructure, human resources, and medicines. This initiative seeks to enhance the delivery of Ayush healthcare services across states and Union territories, aligning with the principles of the National Health Policy (NHP), 2017, which emphasizes pluralism and quality healthcare for all.

As India continues to explore traditional Ayurvedic remedies alongside modern medical practices, collaborations between institutions like CCRAS, ICMR, and AIIMS represent a significant step towards integrating the best of both worlds to address public health challenges effectively.
