Bakrid Horror: Man Killed in Haridwar Over Old Grudge, Accused Surrenders

Haridwar | June 6, 2025

In a harrowing incident that has left an entire town shaken, a young man named Sahil was brutally murdered in broad daylight in Manglaur, a locality in Haridwar district, just minutes after Eid prayers on the occasion of Bakrid.

The victim, a resident of Pathanpura, was allegedly attacked and killed by his neighbor, Riyazat, who believed Sahil was involved in the tragic drowning of his son a year ago. According to eyewitnesses, the attack took place in full public view, on a street still bustling with people returning from the local mosque after morning prayers.

A Festival Turned Tragic

Bakrid, usually marked by joy, brotherhood, and celebration, took a dark turn in Manglaur as the community witnessed a gruesome act of vengeance. According to police officials, Riyazat approached Sahil with a sharp weapon and repeatedly slashed him, leaving him bleeding on the street.

Bystanders were left stunned as the assailant made no attempt to escape. Instead, Riyazat walked straight to the Manglaur police outpost, where he confessed to the murder and surrendered.

Old Grudge Behind Cold-Blooded Killing

Police sources revealed that Riyazat had long suspected Sahil’s involvement in the death of his son, who had drowned in a nearby canal last year. While there was no formal case or proof ever linking Sahil to the incident, the suspicion simmered for months, ultimately culminating in the fatal act of violence.

Senior officers from the Haridwar Police confirmed that the accused is in custody and has been booked under relevant sections of the IPC for murder. Sahil’s body has been sent for postmortem, and a detailed investigation is underway.

Community in Mourning

The shocking nature of the crime—especially on a day of religious significance—has left local residents in deep grief and disbelief. What was meant to be a day of festivity turned into one of mourning, as news of the murder spread rapidly through the town. Shops began to shutter early, and many Eid celebrations were cancelled or subdued in solidarity with the victim’s family.

Local leaders have called for calm and restraint, urging the public to allow the police to complete their investigation. Security has been tightened in the area to prevent any potential unrest.
