Centre modifies rule on capital gains tax on real estate: Why this is a relief for homeowners

The Union Budget 2024, announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, had proposed to lower the long-term capital gains tax from 20 per cent to 12.5 per cent but removed the indexation benefits on home purchases. However, now the Centre has proposed an amendment, allowing taxpayers to choose between a lower tax rate without indexation or a higher rate with indexation for properties
