The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids on multiple locations in Uttarakhand and Delhi-NCR, targeting Uttarakhand Congress leader and former minister Harak Singh Rawat in connection with a money laundering case. The raids stem from allegations involving illegal activities such as unauthorized tree felling and construction within the Corbett Tiger Reserve, as well as fraudulent land acquisition for an educational institute linked to Rawat and his family.
Premises associated with the Doon Institute of Medical Sciences and individuals identified as Virender Kandari and Narender K Walia were also searched during the operation. harak singh rawat ‘s political journey has been marked by affiliations with various parties, including the BJP, BSP, and Congress. Notably, he joined the Congress ahead of the 2022 Uttarakhand assembly elections after being dismissed from the state cabinet and the BJP for alleged anti-party activities.
Last year, a committee appointed by the Supreme Court held Rawat and a former divisional forest officer responsible for illegal activities, including constructions related to a tiger safari within the Corbett Tiger Reserve. Additionally, allegations surfaced regarding the fraudulent acquisition of land for an educational institute.
Rawat’s political career has been characterized by shifts between different parties, reflecting the dynamic nature of state politics. Despite these developments, the ED raids underscore the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Rawat’s activities and the broader issue of corruption within the political landscape of Uttarakhand.
