Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, has voiced support for India’s pursuit of a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Musk expressed his view that it is “absurd” for India, the most populous country on Earth, not to have a permanent seat on the Security Council. He highlighted the reluctance of those with excess power to relinquish it as a significant challenge in the process.
India has long sought reform in the UNSC, where five permanent members currently hold veto power over resolutions. Elon Musk ‘s endorsement aligns with India’s frustration over the slow progress in discussions on Security Council reform. The issue of expanding the UNSC’s permanent membership, including India, has been a topic of debate and advocacy for broader representation.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has also called for reforms in UN institutions, emphasizing the need for institutions to reflect the current world, not that of 80 years ago. The upcoming Summit of the Future, scheduled for September 22-23, aims to address global governance reforms and discuss the adoption of an action-oriented Outcome Document titled the “Pact for the Future.”
Elon Musk ‘s endorsement of India’s bid for a permanent UNSC seat adds a notable voice to the ongoing discussions surrounding the reform and representation within the United Nations.
