In the aftermath of violent clashes in Haldwani, a Muslim Peace Committee convened a meeting with local authorities to address the situation. The meeting, attended by Nainital SSP Prahlad Narayan Meena and DM Vandana Singh, aimed to restore peace in the riot-affected area. The discussions centered on identifying and apprehending the rioters responsible for the recent violence, with DM Vandana Singh affirming that strict action would be taken against them. She urged Muslim representatives to assist in providing information about the perpetrators to expedite the restoration of peace and relaxation of the curfew.
However, city Imam Mohammad Azam Qadri expressed concerns about potential harassment of innocent people by the police and administration. While advocating for lifting the curfew, Qadri emphasized the importance of delivering strict punishment to the rioters. He lamented the lack of communication between the administration and prominent Muslim representatives during the incident, highlighting the need for inclusive dialogue and cooperation to prevent future unrest.
Meanwhile, the Haldwani Municipality Corporation issued a recovery notice of Rs 2.44 crore against Abdul Malik, a key accused in the violence. The notice demanded compensation for the damage caused to government property during the clashes. Malik’s supporters allegedly attacked the demolition team and vandalized municipality corporation properties, leading to the substantial financial loss. The civic body urged Malik to deposit the specified amount by February 15, attributing the damages to his orchestrated involvement in the incident.
Law enforcement authorities have intensified efforts to apprehend individuals involved in the violence, resulting in the arrest of 30 suspects, including Abdul Malik. Recovered country-made weapons and live rounds further underscore the severity of the situation. The clashes, which claimed five lives and left numerous others injured, erupted during an anti-encroachment drive in Banbhoolpura. Subsequent acts of violence, including stone-pelting and vehicle arson, prompted the issuance of a shoot-at-sight order by the administration to restore order.
Recent reports shed light on Abdul Malik’s previous involvement in providing legal aid to illegal encroachers occupying Indian Railways land in Haldwani. Malik’s advocacy for families facing eviction garnered significant public sympathy, complicating the efforts to address the recent violence. As authorities continue to grapple with the aftermath of the clashes, community engagement and collaborative initiatives remain crucial in fostering long-term peace and stability in Haldwani.
