As the Central government notified rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), security measures have been ramped up in several parts of the country, particularly in Delhi and Assam.
In Delhi, police officers and paramilitary forces have been deployed in sensitive areas, with flag marches conducted in certain parts of northeast and southeast Delhi. The Delhi Police have enhanced security arrangements in areas like northeast Delhi, Shaheen Bagh, and Jamia, aiming to maintain peace and prevent any untoward incidents.
Speaking about the security arrangements, DCP of North East Delhi, Joy Tirkey, emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of every individual in the northeast district. Measures include tagging potential troublemakers, monitoring social media, and conducting flag marches to reassure the public.
Similarly, in Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida), the police conducted a flag march to demonstrate a visible presence and assure the populace of their safety.
In Assam, heightened security measures have also been implemented, with all police stations on high alert. Patrolling has been intensified in sensitive areas, anticipating potential protests against the CAA rules notification. Opposition parties, including the All Assam Students Union and the United Opposition Forum in Assam, have announced protests and a statewide hartal.
The CAA rules notification marks the beginning of the process to grant Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014. However, concerns remain regarding the implications and implementation of the CAA, as evidenced by past protests and communal riots in Delhi in 2020.
As the nation navigates through these developments, ensuring security and addressing concerns regarding citizenship laws remain paramount for the government and law enforcement agencies.
