The High-Level Committee (HLC) on ‘One Nation, One Election,’ headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind, is set to submit its final report to the Union government before the announcement of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The committee, tasked with exploring the feasibility of simultaneous elections across the country, is in the final stages of compiling suggestions from various stakeholders.
People familiar with the matter reveal that the report is expected to be submitted in February or March, highlighting the urgency and relevance of its findings in the context of the upcoming electoral cycle. The committee aims to present a comprehensive document that incorporates inputs from diverse sources, including the Election Commission, legal experts, political parties, and citizens.
The HLC, led by Ram Nath Kovind, has been actively engaging in a consultation process to gather insights from prominent figures such as former Chief Justices, former Chief Election Commissioners, and political parties. The committee’s commitment to inclusivity is evident in its efforts to consider suggestions from various quarters, ensuring a balanced and well-informed report.
The committee’s meticulous approach involves incorporating suggestions from a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including political parties, citizens, and legal experts. The inclusion of more than 50 jurists, including former Chief Justices of India, underscores the importance attached to diverse perspectives in shaping the recommendations.
While several opposition parties, including CPI, CPI(Marxist), DMK, TMC, AIMIM, and NPF, have expressed reservations and opposition to the proposal for simultaneous elections, the ruling BJP and its allies have expressed support. The Congress, along with other opposition voices, has voiced its dissent to the idea.
The HLC has received an overwhelming response from the public, with over 15,000 emails and 12,000 submissions via the ‘One Nation, One Election’ website. Approximately 70% of the respondents have expressed support for the concept of simultaneous elections, reflecting the diverse opinions within the public domain.
The committee has actively sought suggestions from the Election Commission, awaiting its valuable input. The HLC is scheduled to hold its third formal meeting on January 21, emphasizing ongoing collaboration and engagement in the formulation of its report.
