In a horrific hit-and-run incident on Sunday morning, a speeding BMW car struck a two-wheeler in Mumbai’s Worli area, resulting in the death of a woman and serious injuries to her husband. The luxury car, allegedly driven by Mihir Shah, the son of a Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) leader, dragged the woman for over 100 meters before she succumbed to her injuries.

The incident occurred around 5:30 am near Atria Mall, as Pradeep Nakhawa and his wife, Kaveri Nakhawa, were returning home to Koliwada from Sassoon Dock after purchasing fish. The BMW, traveling at high speed, rammed into their scooter from behind. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn, and both individuals were thrown onto the car’s bonnet. While Pradeep managed to jump off, Kaveri, who was carrying a heavy load, was unable to do so and was tragically dragged along the road by the car.

The injured couple was quickly transported to Nair Hospital for medical treatment. Unfortunately, Kaveri Nakhawa, aged 45, succumbed to her severe injuries. Pradeep Nakhawa sustained injuries but was discharged after receiving treatment.

Following the incident, the Worli Police seized the BMW and detained its owner, Rajesh Shah, a local leader of the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) in Palghar. Rajesh’s son, Mihir Shah, who is believed to have been driving the car, remains at large. The police have also detained Rajrishi Bidawat, who was reportedly in the car during the accident. Six police teams have been deployed to locate Mihir Shah.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde condemned the incident, emphasizing that the law would be applied equally and without bias. “There will be no separate rule for this accident. Everything will be done as per the law. The police will not shield anyone,” Shinde stated.

Aditya Thackeray, a Shiv Sena (UBT) leader, visited the Worli Police station and met with the victim’s husband. Thackeray called for stringent action and highlighted the need for improved traffic discipline and safety in Mumbai.

The tragic event has sparked significant public outrage, drawing parallels to a recent hit-and-run case in Pune involving a 17-year-old who was granted bail despite killing a young couple while allegedly driving under the influence. The Worli incident has intensified calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and accountability, especially for those in positions of influence.

A case has been registered based on Pradeep Nakhawa’s statement under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicle Act. These include Sections 105, 281, 125(b), 238, 324(4), 184, 134(a), 134(b), and 187.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on locating Mihir Shah and ensuring justice for the victims. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless driving and the urgent need for comprehensive road safety measures.

The Mumbai Police have pledged to conduct a thorough investigation and hold all responsible parties accountable, ensuring that justice is served for Kaveri Nakhawa and her grieving family.
