The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert’ for Uttarakhand, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall from Sunday, July 7, until July 10. This alert has prompted heightened precautions and measures across the state to mitigate the impact of the anticipated deluge.
Districts Expected to Be Affected
- July 7: Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Pauri districts are predicted to experience extremely heavy rainfall.
- July 10: Heavy rains are expected in Tehri, Pauri, Bageshwar, Almora, Nainital, and Champawat districts.
Government Response
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed district magistrates in the affected areas to maintain high alertness. Emphasis has been placed on ensuring readiness to handle potential emergencies due to heavy rainfall.
Impact on Char Dham Yatra
The Char Dham Yatra, a significant pilgrimage in Uttarakhand, has been halted due to the heavy rain alert. Garhwal Divisional Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey has ordered pilgrims en route to the temples to stop their journey and stay at their current location to avoid any mishaps.
Public Warnings and Road Conditions
- Chamoli Police: Issued warnings to the public advising against unnecessary travel and to stay in safe places. They have updated that roads have been blocked near the Baldouda bridge ahead of Vishnu Prayag on the Badrinath National Highway.
- Rudraprayag Police: Informed that traffic has been halted at Rudraprayag Gaurikund National Highway-107 due to continuous heavy rainfall, with efforts ongoing to clear the road.
Rainfall Predictions in Other Parts of India
- Northwest and Central India: Moderate to widespread light rainfall, combined with thunderstorms and lightning, is expected over the next five days.
- Delhi: The regional meteorological centre forecasts a mostly cloudy sky with light rain expected until July 12. The maximum temperature is projected to reach around 34 degrees Celsius.
- Isolated Heavy Rainfall: Himachal Pradesh and Punjab on July 7, East Uttar Pradesh on July 8 and 10, East Rajasthan on July 7 and 10, East Madhya Pradesh from July 7 to 11, West Madhya Pradesh from July 7 to 11, Vidarbha on July 8 and 9, and Chhattisgarh from July 7 to 9. Uttar Pradesh may experience very heavy rainfall on July 7.
- East and Northeast India: Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Specific regions include Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Bihar, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura.
- South and Western India: Heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Coastal Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka, and Kerala & Mahe.
