Imphal, Manipur – The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex organization representing the Kuki tribes, announced a 12-hour total shutdown on Wednesday. This protest, supported by various Kuki-Zo civil bodies, demands the immediate and unconditional release of five Kuki-Zo individuals arrested by central forces in the Tamenglong and Kangpokpi districts.
Impact of the Shutdown
The shutdown, effective from 6 am to 6 pm, disrupted normal life in Kuki-Zo-dominated areas, including Churachandpur and Kangpokpi. Key establishments like markets, schools, and colleges were closed, and protesters held sit-ins at various locations, including Tuibong, Peace Ground in Churachandpur, Leimakhong, and L Hengjol village along National Highway 37 (Imphal-Silchar via Jiribam road).
Protest Details
KIM’s statement expressed grave concern over the arrests, emphasizing the perceived injustice faced by the Kuki-Zo people, especially in light of valley-based militant groups brandishing sophisticated arms without similar repercussions. The protests saw significant participation from women and included road blockades on NH-37.
On Tuesday evening, Kuki-Zo residents of Kangpokpi district also protested outside the Superintendent of Police’s office along NH-2 (Imphal-Dimapur), demanding the release of the detained individuals.
Arrest and Police Statement
According to Manipur police, the arrests occurred under different circumstances. Two individuals were apprehended from Phaijol village in Tamenglong after an armed attack on Manipur police. The other three were detained in L Hengjol village based on a tip-off from the National Investigation Agency (NIA). These individuals were reportedly members of a militant outfit and were found with arms and ammunition, including an MA1 MK-3 rifle, two AK rifles, and a single-barrel bore rifle. They have since been handed over to the NIA for further investigation.
The arrest and subsequent protests highlight the ongoing tensions in Manipur, particularly in areas with significant Kuki-Zo populations. The Kuki Inpi Manipur’s actions reflect the community’s broader concerns about security, justice, and their treatment by authorities.
