A Raja, the DMK leader and former Union Minister, sparked controversy with his remarks at a function in Coimbatore, where he emphasized India’s diversity and questioned the concept of India as a single nation with one language, culture, and tradition.
Raja argued that India is not a conventional nation but rather a subcontinent, highlighting the diversity of languages, cultures, and traditions across different regions. He specifically pointed out Tamil Nadu as an example, stating that it has its own distinct language and culture. He further asserted that India’s strength lies in its ability to embrace and accommodate these diverse identities, making it a subcontinent rather than a single country.
His comments also touched upon the recent incident where supporters of the Bilkis Bano gangrape convicts chanted “Jai Shri Ram” upon their release. Raja expressed opposition to such chants, stating that Tamil Nadu cannot accept them and questioning the notion of Ram associated with such actions.
However, Raja’s remarks faced criticism from various quarters, including the BJP, Congress, and RJD. BJP leader Giriraj Singh accused him of wanting to destroy the “sanatan culture,” while RJD chief Tejashwi Yadav distanced his party from Raja’s statement, clarifying that it was his personal view and not that of the alliance. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate condemned his comments, emphasizing that Ram belongs to everyone and represents an ideal way of living.
Amit Malviya, the head of the BJP IT Cell, criticized Raja’s speech, alleging hate speech from the DMK’s side and accusing them of challenging the idea of India as a nation.
Raja’s remarks come amidst heightened political tensions in Tamil Nadu, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently predicting the end of the DMK after the elections. Raja retorted by asserting that the DMK would exist as long as India exists, challenging Modi’s assertion.
He also invoked the preamble of the Indian Constitution, warning against scenarios where India ceases to exist, suggesting that Tamil Nadu could become a separate entity in such circumstances.
