Targeting Nupur Sharma
In its latest edition, the ISIS-backed magazine “Voice of Khurasan” has explicitly targeted former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. The magazine indirectly referenced Sharma’s so-called controversial remarks, describing them as deeply offensive. Notably, these attacks on Sharma come at a time when she has resumed limited public appearances and congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on winning the General Elections for the third consecutive term. ISIS exploited this incident to justify its call for violent jihad against India, asserting that such perceived insults are part of a broader pattern of disrespect and hostility towards Islam and Muslims by Indian political leaders.
It’s important to recall that Nupur Sharma’s remarks echoed assertions made by several Islamic scholars, including Zakir Naik. Sharma was responding to Tasleem Rehmani during a Times Now debate after Rehmani had insulted Lord Shiva and the Shivling found at the Gyanvapi premises. Islamist propagandist Mohammad Zubair of AltNews edited the clip of Sharma, claiming she insulted Islam without providing context. Following Zubair’s edited clip, Sharma received threats of rape, murder, and decapitation.
New Target: Madhvi Latha Kompella
The magazine also targets BJP leader Madhvi Latha Kompella, who challenged AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. Despite not winning, Kompella significantly impacted the AIMIM campaign, forcing Owaisi to intensify his efforts. Kompella, who was allegedly arrested in 2023 for remarks against Muslims, is now a fresh target of Islamists. This incident is cited as another example of the BJP’s alleged systemic anti-Muslim rhetoric, reinforcing the magazine’s narrative of oppression and justifying calls for violent retribution.
Incitement to Violence
The magazine’s rhetoric is filled with incitement to violence, claiming that India and its surrounding areas have become hostile to Muslims. It reads:
“In general, the Indian polytheists and cow-worshipping fools are inexorably hostile to Islam, and the enmity of Narendra Modi and the BJP party is exactly like the enmity of Pharaoh with the Bani Israel. In India today, about 220 million Muslim people are spending nights full of horror and barbarism in slavery and subjugation to Hindus.”
ISIS urges Muslims in India to engage in violent acts against non-Muslims, calling for assassination, bombings, and other forms of terrorism, portraying these actions as a religious duty to avenge perceived wrongs against the Muslim community. The article glorifies violent jihad, advocating attacks on Hindu temples, public places, and political figures, and calls for the destruction of idols and the killing of those deemed enemies of Islam.
Dangerous Implications
The calls for genocide and violence in the magazine pose a significant threat to India’s national security. The publication is widely circulated on Telegram channels and social media platforms, including Facebook, increasing its reach and potential to inspire lone-wolf attacks and coordinated terrorist activities. The specific targeting of political leaders, public figures, and religious sites heightens the risk of high-profile attacks that could cause widespread fear and destabilization.
Urgent Need for Counter-Terrorism Measures
This blog post aims to raise awareness about the dangerous propaganda being spread by ISIS and the urgent need for effective counter-terrorism strategies to protect national security.
