The late former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao has been posthumously honored with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in recognition of his significant contributions to the nation, particularly his pivotal role in ushering in economic reforms in 1991. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an announcement acknowledging Rao’s remarkable legacy, highlighted his visionary leadership and enduring impact on India’s economic advancement.

Expressing his delight over the prestigious accolade, PM Modi lauded Narasimha Rao’s distinguished career as a scholar, statesman, and political leader, emphasizing his extensive service to the nation across various capacities. Rao’s tenure as Prime Minister was marked by transformative measures that facilitated India’s integration into global markets, laying the groundwork for sustained economic growth and development.

PM Modi underscored Narasimha Rao’s instrumental role in shaping India’s foreign policy and his contributions to the nation’s cultural and intellectual heritage. Additionally, he commended Rao’s initiatives in the language and education sectors, highlighting his multifaceted legacy as a leader who navigated India through critical transformations.

Who was PV Narasimha Rao?

Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao, born on June 28, 1921, emerged as a towering Congress leader in undivided Andhra Pradesh, eventually ascending to the position of the 9th Prime Minister of India. Rao’s tenure from 1991 to 1996 coincided with a period of significant economic challenges, during which his government implemented landmark reforms in globalization, liberalization, and privatization.

Rao, hailing from a Telugu Niyogi Brahmin family in Laknepalli village, Warangal, Telangana, played a pivotal role in India’s struggle for independence, participating in the Vande Mataram movement. He entered full-time politics post-Independence, serving in various ministerial positions in Andhra Pradesh before assuming the Chief Minister’s office in 1971.

Known for his loyalty to Indira Gandhi, Rao became the first Prime Minister from south India and steered India through critical junctures, including the aftermath of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination. Despite initial retirement plans, Rao returned to active politics and appointed renowned economist Manmohan Singh as Finance Minister, together implementing groundbreaking economic reforms.

BJP’s Allegations Against the Congress

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Congress of disrespecting Narasimha Rao during his lifetime and after his demise. PM Modi criticized the Congress for failing to acknowledge Rao’s contributions to nation-building, alleging that the party prioritized glorifying a single family over honoring its own leaders.

Former Telangana Minister KT Rama Rao echoed similar sentiments, condemning the Congress for allegedly dishonoring Rao even after his death, further intensifying the debate surrounding Rao’s legacy within India’s political landscape.
