The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Delhi Police have collaborated to dismantle a large-scale drug trafficking network operating out of Delhi. On February 15th, authorities conducted a successful operation resulting in the arrest of three individuals from Tamil Nadu and the seizure of 50 kilograms of pseudoephedrine, a crucial component in methamphetamine production.
The arrested individuals confessed to orchestrating 45 consignments over three years, totaling approximately 3,500 kilograms of pseudoephedrine. These shipments, valued at over Rs 2,000 crore internationally, demonstrate the magnitude of the illicit trade and the substantial profits involved. The network’s plan to conceal pseudoephedrine within food products further highlights the sophistication of their operations.
Deputy Director General of the NCB, Gyaneshwar Singh, revealed that the operation was initiated based on intelligence provided by the US Drug Enforcement Administration. Collaborative efforts with Australian and New Zealand authorities led to the identification of the syndicate’s activities, prompting the joint raid in Delhi.
The raid, conducted at a warehouse in West Delhi’s Basai Darapur, resulted in the apprehension of syndicate members and the seizure of 50 kilograms of pseudoephedrine concealed within a multigrain food mixture. Despite the arrests, the alleged mastermind, a Tamil film producer, remains at large. Efforts are underway to apprehend him and dismantle the entire network.
Pseudoephedrine, a precursor chemical for methamphetamine, commands a high price in international markets, making it a lucrative target for drug traffickers. The legal consequences for possession and trade of pseudoephedrine in India are severe, with penalties of up to 10 years of imprisonment under the NDPS Act. Authorities are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and preventing further harm from this illicit trade.
