Following the violent clashes in Haldwani triggered by the demolition of an unauthorized madrasa, a new police chowki has been established at the site of the unrest. The inauguration, led by women police officials, marks a significant step towards restoring order and enhancing security in the area. Formerly known as “Malik Ka Bageecha,” the site has been renamed “Police Ka Bageecha” by authorities, symbolizing the transition towards peace and stability.
The clashes, which resulted in five fatalities and numerous injuries, erupted after authorities bulldozed the madrasa and an adjoining prayer site, citing lack of permission for their construction. Subsequent protests by locals led to confrontations with law enforcement, necessitating the deployment of tear gas to quell the unrest.
In response to the violence, authorities implemented stringent measures, including the suspension of internet services, closure of schools, imposition of a curfew, and prohibition of large gatherings. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced plans to construct a police station on the land previously occupied by illegal encroachments in the Banbhoolpura area, signaling a commitment to maintaining law and order.
The issuance of a recovery notice amounting to ₹2.44 crore against Abdul Malik, identified as a key instigator of the violence, underscores the government’s resolve to hold individuals accountable for damages inflicted on public property. Malik, named in the FIR filed in connection with the incident, faces repercussions for his alleged role in orchestrating the attack on the demolition team and causing destruction during the clashes.
CM Dhami’s announcement of the police station’s construction serves as a stern warning to perpetrators of unrest, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding peace and security in Uttarakhand. The establishment of the new police chowki and renaming of the site reflect efforts to reclaim public spaces and foster a sense of security among residents. As authorities continue to address the aftermath of the violence, collaborative initiatives and community engagement remain essential in building resilience and preventing future incidents of unrest.
