Padma Awards Honoring Excellence and Contribution Across Various Fields

President Droupadi Murmu conferred the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award upon former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, the late social reformer Bindeshwar Pathak, and renowned Bharat Natyam dancer Padma Subrahmanyam during a ceremonial function at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Alongside them, notable personalities like actor Mithun Chakraborty, singer Usha Uthup, former Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik, and industrialist Sitaram Jindal were honored with the Padma Bhushan.

Padma awards, among India’s highest civilian honors, are bestowed in three categories—Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri—recognizing exceptional contributions across various domains including art, social work, science, literature, sports, and civil service. The Padma Vibhushan is conferred for exceptional and distinguished service, Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order, and Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field.

In this year’s Padma awards, a total of 132 individuals were honored, including 5 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan, and 110 Padma Shri awardees, reflecting diversity and excellence across different sectors and demographics.

President Murmu commended Venkaiah Naidu for his remarkable five-decade-long political career, highlighting his simplicity and humane approach towards governance, which earned him a unique place in Indian politics. Bindeshwar Pathak, the founder of Sulabh International Social Service Organization, was praised for advocating behavior change and promoting hygienic sanitation practices among millions.

Padma Subrahmanyam’s contribution to Bharatiya Sastriya Natana, bridging the gap between history, theory, and practice, was lauded by the president, acknowledging her significant role in enriching India’s cultural heritage.

The Padma awards ceremony witnessed the presence of dignitaries including Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, underscoring the importance and recognition accorded to the awardees for their outstanding contributions to society.
