In a significant security lapse, multiple unauthorized gadgets, including a smartphone with SIM, a spy-cam pen, pen drives, and Bluetooth devices, were discovered inside the National Security Agency (NSA) cell of Assam’s Dibrugarh Central Jail. The cell houses Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh and other members of the separatist group Waris Punjab De.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh confirmed receiving inputs about unauthorized activities within the NSA cell, prompting immediate action. A thorough search conducted by jail staff resulted in the recovery of the aforementioned gadgets. The source of these items and the manner in which they were introduced into the cell are currently under investigation.
In response to the breach, the Assam police have launched a search operation and ordered the installation of additional CCTV cameras in the surrounding areas of the NSA Block. DGP Singh emphasized the need for lawful action to prevent such incidents from recurring.
The discovery comes amid heightened security concerns surrounding the detention of Amritpal Singh and his associates. The chief of Waris Punjab De was apprehended by Punjab Police on April 23, 2023, in Moga district after an extensive manhunt. Singh and his accomplices, including his uncle, were detained under the provisions of the National Security Act (NSA).
The incident underscores the challenges authorities face in maintaining security within high-security prison facilities, particularly when housing individuals associated with sensitive and politically charged cases. Further investigations are underway to determine the origin of the unauthorized gadgets and any potential security breaches within the Dibrugarh Central Jail.
