Dr. Yashwant Singh Kathoch, a prominent historian from Uttarakhand, has been conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri award in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of education and history. With 33 years of dedicated service as an educator, Dr. Kathoch has been an influential figure in shaping the academic landscape.
Born in the quaint village of Maanso in Pauri Janpad, Dr. Kathoch earned the first position in Ancient Indian History, Culture, and Archaeology from Agra University in 1974. In 1978, he presented his research work on the Garhwal Himalayas at Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, receiving a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.
Dr. Kathoch’s scholarly pursuits extend to the realms of Indian culture, history, and archaeology. In 1973, he became a founding member of the established North Regional Institute of Higher Education in Uttarakhand. His extensive research includes works on the prehistory of the Middle Himalayas, the military tradition of Uttarakhand, and symbols of culture.
In addition to his academic endeavors, Dr. Kathoch has been an advocate for preserving the rich cultural heritage of the region. His profound knowledge has been shared through 12 published books, covering diverse topics such as the archaeology of the Central Himalayas, Uttarakhand’s military tradition, and Vastu Shastra studies of the Central Himalayas.
As the founder member of the Uttarakhand Research Institute established in 1973, Dr. Kathoch has played a pivotal role in promoting continuous research in the fields of history and culture. His forthcoming works include essays on history, culture, and the prehistory of the Central Himalayas.
