In a distressing turn of events, a Spanish woman was allegedly raped and her husband assaulted by a group of men in Dumka district of Jharkhand. The couple, on a motorcycle tour of South Asia, fell victim to the heinous crime while camping in a forest near Dumka, Jharkhand.
According to reports, the couple, comprising a 30-year-old Spanish woman and her 64-year-old Brazilian husband, had traversed through Pakistan and Bangladesh before entering India via West Bengal. Their intended route included Bihar and Nepal. However, their journey took a nightmarish turn when they set up camp in the forest of Kunji Basti, only to be attacked by a group of seven men.
The assailants allegedly attempted to rape the woman and assaulted her husband when they resisted. Subsequently, the perpetrators fled the scene with some of the couple’s belongings. The incident came to light around 11 pm when a police patrolling team encountered the distressed couple near the Dumka-Bhagalpur road. Despite the language barrier, the woman managed to communicate the harrowing ordeal to the police using Google translate.
Both victims were promptly taken to Saraiyahat Community Health Centre for medical attention, where doctors confirmed the assault. Following initial investigations, three suspects have been detained, while efforts are underway to apprehend four others allegedly involved in the crime. The detained suspects, aged between 20 and 30, reportedly confessed to their involvement in the incident.
The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the safety of tourists, especially foreign nationals, in India. Political figures have weighed in on the matter, with BJP legislator Amit Mandal demanding the suspension of the Dumka SP and alleging attempts to shield the perpetrators. Meanwhile, Godda MP Nishikant Dubey called for improved law and order in the state to prevent such atrocities.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are under pressure to ensure justice for the victims and take concrete steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. The appalling incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address issues of safety and security, particularly in remote areas frequented by tourists.
