Telangana Police to Reopen Investigation into Rohith Vemula ‘s Death

‘rohith Vemula Was Not A Dalit’: Who Was The Student, Whose Death Sparked A Political Uproar?

On Friday, May 3rd, the Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) announced a decision to conduct further investigations into the tragic death of University of Hyderabad PhD scholar Rohith Vemula, which occurred in January 2016. This announcement came on the heels of the submission of a closure report by the Telangana Police, wherein they concluded that Vemula had taken his own life out of fear that his true caste identity, not belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category, would be exposed. The closure report absolved any individuals of responsibility for his suicide.

In response to doubts raised by Vemula’s family regarding the investigation, the Telangana DGP released a statement confirming the decision to pursue further inquiry. The statement emphasized addressing concerns expressed by Vemula’s mother and others, indicating a commitment to seek permission from the court for additional investigation.

The closure report, submitted to the jurisdictional court on March 21, 2024, stated that Rohith Vemula’s suicide was not attributed to any external factors or individuals. It underscored Vemula’s personal struggles and dissatisfaction with life circumstances, rather than any specific events at the University. Moreover, the report clarified that Vemula, aware of his non-membership in the Scheduled Caste, harbored fears of potential repercussions and loss of academic standing if his caste identity was revealed.

Justice Ashok Kumar Roopanwal’s investigative report further corroborated the findings, asserting that Vemula’s decision to end his life was not influenced by the university administration or political figures. However, his death had been politicized by certain groups, falsely attributing it to caste discrimination and exploiting it for political agendas.

Vemula’s tragic demise, initially portrayed as a conflict between Dalits and Non-Dalits, has undergone scrutiny over his caste identity, with the police confirming he was not a Dalit. This revelation has stirred debate and criticism surrounding the politicization of his death and the exploitation of caste narratives for political gain.

The reopening of the investigation into Rohith Vemula’s death underscores the quest for truth and justice, aiming to address lingering doubts and ensure transparency in the pursuit of accountability.
