Tesla to Launch in India with Model Y; First Showrooms in Mumbai and Delhi by Mid-July

Tesla to open its first showrooms in India in July

Tesla is set to officially begin operations in India next month, with its first showrooms expected to open in Mumbai and New Delhi by mid-July, according to media reports. The US-based electric vehicle (EV) giant will mark its entry into the Indian market with the launch of the Model Y SUV, which will be imported from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai, China. The version to be offered is reportedly a single-motor rear-wheel-drive configuration, suitable for urban and semi-urban commuting.

Tesla has already imported five units of the Model Y to India. These were declared at a base value of ₹27.70 lakh (approximately $31,988) per vehicle. Given India’s high import duty structure for completely built units (CBUs), which imposes a 70% tariff on cars priced under $40,000, each Model Y has attracted over ₹21 lakh in import duties. This means that when it officially goes on sale, the Model Y could cost upwards of ₹48 lakh (about $56,000), pricing it in the luxury EV segment.

Alongside the vehicles, Tesla has also brought in Supercharger components, accessories, spare parts, and merchandise from the US, China, and the Netherlands. This signals the company’s intent to establish a basic infrastructure for EV support and branding, even before setting up local manufacturing or assembly units in India.
