In a tragic turn of events that has shocked many across the country, Rosmita Hojai, a young woman from Assam’s Dima Hasao district, was found dead in Uttarakhand on Tuesday—five days after she went missing from Delhi, where she had travelled to take a government exam.

A resident of Sontilla Hojai village, Rosmita had travelled to the national capital to appear for the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) examination on June 5. But what was supposed to be a step toward a promising career ended in heartbreak. According to police reports, Rosmita left for Rishikesh the following day with two male friends, one of whom was a former classmate from Haryana.

The trio reportedly went camping near Shivpuri, a popular adventure destination along the banks of the Ganga. That evening, her companions informed local authorities that Rosmita had gone missing—allegedly swept away in the river. Eyewitnesses claimed they saw a woman drowning near the site.

For days, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) combed the area. On June 10, her lifeless body was finally recovered from the river near Pauri Garhwal. Police, though initially treating it as a case of accidental drowning, are also investigating possible foul play or suicide.

A Community in Mourning

Confirmation of her death was shared by Dima Hasao’s Chief Executive Member (CEM) Debolal Gorlosa, who expressed deep sorrow on social media.

“This is an unthinkable loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with her grieving family,” Gorlosa posted.
“I urge strict legal action against the individuals involved in this horrifying incident. Justice must be served.”

He also thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Uttarakhand Police for their assistance during the search and recovery efforts.
