In the wake of violent protests in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is attempting to disassociate itself from Sheikh Shahjahan’s brother, Sirajuddin. West Bengal Cabinet Minister Partha Bhowmik stated that Sirajuddin had been removed as the ‘head of the Panchayat’ long ago, without specifying the exact timeline of his removal.
The protests escalated on Friday when villagers set fire to Sirajuddin’s property, expressing their anger towards the TMC leader and his brother. However, a BJP leader criticized such announcements of suspension or removal from party posts, suggesting that controversial figures often resurface once controversies fade away.
On Sunday, a fact-finding committee faced obstruction from West Bengal police and government officials when attempting to meet with victims in Sandeshkhali. The committee members expressed their dismay over being stopped illegally and vowed to escalate the matter to higher authorities, including the Chief Minister, Governor, Union Home Minister, and Prime Minister.
They accused the state government of a collapse in the constitutional machinery and criticized the police for executing illegal orders and violating the law. The committee, comprising esteemed individuals such as ex-Chief Justice of the Patna High Court Justice L Narasimha Reddy, ex-IPS officer Raj Pal Singh, and others, demanded access to the victims to assess the situation firsthand.
