The prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi award ceremony took place recently, honoring outstanding artists in the field of performing arts. Among the distinguished recipients was Zahoor Alam, a senior theatre actor and the founder of the theatre organization Yugmanch, hailing from Nainital. With nearly five decades of experience in the industry, Alam was recognized for his exceptional contributions to theatre, particularly for his direction skills. He is renowned for his work in writing, folk music, and organizing the Holi Mahotsav.
Additionally, Rakesh Bhatt, a theatre professor at Doon University in Dehradun, was honored in the ‘Folk Theatre’ category. Bhatt expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the significance of nurturing talent in various art forms across Uttarakhand.
From Srinagar, the husband-wife folk singing duo, Sanjay Pandey and Lata Tiwari Pandey, were awarded in the under-40 youth category. Both accomplished musicians with extensive experience in traditional folk music, they expressed pride in receiving this prestigious accolade.
Amit Khanduri and Puneet Dimri, associated with the Karnprayag Ramlila, were also among the recipients from Uttarakhand. Additionally, Partho Roy Choudhury, a santoor player, was recognized for his musical prowess.
The Sangeet Natak Akademi award ceremony, held in Delhi, highlighted the rich cultural heritage of India and the significant role of performing arts in preserving it. President Draupadi Murmu lauded the awardees for their dedication and contribution to the Indian art tradition, emphasizing its importance in society.
