The Northern state of Uttarakhand has been battling devastating forest fires for the past two weeks, resulting in the destruction of over 1000 acres of precious forest land. Amidst this environmental crisis, a disturbing video emerged on social media featuring a man proudly admitting to setting fire to forests.
In the video, the individual is heard boasting about igniting the forest, declaring it as their “job” and asserting their capability to “play with fire.” The man, accompanied by his uncle Sukhlal, unabashedly claims responsibility for the act, warning against challenging those proficient in arson. The video also captures another individual wielding a stick, presumably involved in the arson.
Although the exact date of the video remains undisclosed, on Sunday, April 28th, the Uttarakhand Forest Department took action by apprehending five laborers from Bihar suspected of setting fire to reserved forest areas in Khirsu. The arrested individuals were identified as Mosar Alam, Nazifar Alam, Nurul, Salim, and Feroz Alam.
In response to the escalating crisis, the Uttarakhand police have intensified efforts, arresting a total of 52 individuals for their involvement in forest fires. These fires have not only ravaged acres of pristine land but also posed grave threats to human settlements, wildlife, and vital water sources.
The rampant incidents of forest fires have prompted widespread concern and urgent calls for stricter enforcement of environmental protection laws. With over 804 recorded incidents of forest fires and 315 cases registered under the Forest Conservation Act, the need for swift and decisive action to combat this environmental catastrophe is imperative.
