The Uttarakhand government is set to introduce the Uttarakhand Public and Private Property Damage Recovery Bill, aiming to hold those responsible for disturbances during protests financially accountable. Expected to be presented during the upcoming Budget session, the Property Damage Recovery Bill proposes the establishment of a tribunal chaired by a retired district judge to determine compensation for property damage caused by protests.
The initiative follows the violence in Haldwani on February 8, triggered by the demolition of a mosque and a madrasa during an anti-encroachment drive. Responding to the incident, Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami announced that the cost of damaged property would be reclaimed from those involved in the violence.
In the aftermath, the district administration sought information from media persons whose vehicles were damaged, aiming to recover costs from the perpetrators. Additionally, property belonging to several accused individuals has been seized, and notices have been issued, including one to the main accused, Abdul Malik, demanding compensation of Rs 2.44 crore for damage to government property.
