On Thursday, February 8, Haldwani, Uttarakhand, witnessed a violent clash following the demolition of a madrasa built illegally on government land near the Banbhulpura police station. The demolition, part of an ongoing drive against illegal encroachments, led to an eruption of communal tensions and widespread unrest in the area.
Reports indicate that an irate mob attacked authorities, pelting stones at policemen and Municipal Corporation workers present during the demolition. The situation quickly spiraled out of control, with the mob setting fire to vehicles and a transformer, plunging the area into darkness. Several journalists and administration officials found themselves trapped inside the besieged police station as the mob intensified its assault.
In response, the police resorted to tear gas to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation of violence. Videos of the chaotic scene circulated on social media, depicting scenes of arson and stone pelting that left several police officers injured and vehicles ablaze.
In the aftermath of the clash, additional police forces were deployed to restore order, and senior officials of the police and administration rushed to the spot. District Magistrate Nainital imposed a curfew in Banbhulpura and issued shoot-on-sight orders for rioters to contain the situation.
The incident occurred during a demolition drive led by the Municipal Corporation team to raze the illegal structure. Despite prior notices, the management of the madrasa failed to produce any documents proving the legality of the structure, prompting authorities to take action.
The clash in Haldwani underscores the broader issue of illegal encroachments on government land, with the Uttarakhand government launching a crackdown on such structures, including madrasas and mazars. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has reiterated the government’s commitment to removing illegal structures, particularly those encroaching on reserved forest land.
The unrest highlights the challenges posed by communal tensions and the imperative for swift and decisive action to uphold law and order. As authorities work to quell the violence and restore calm, efforts to address the root causes of illegal encroachments remain critical to preventing future flare-ups and maintaining social harmony.
